Asian Peoples in Yokohama-e

While depicting Westerns in yokohama-e was common there also exist depictions of other Asian nations in these prints. In this exhibition I hope to bring to light the presence of these Asian peoples in yokohama-e. In earlier English scholarship Chinese people’s presence was identified in their role as translators or servants but not examined in their own right. Scholarship has yet to address Siamese, Ryukyuan, Ainu, Indians, Koreans, and other Southeast Asians in these prints of foreigners. The selection of prints blow focuses on the presence of neighbors closer to Japan than their Western counterparts. In the prints below the Asian peoples are idetified not only by the text on the print, but each group was assigned a set of characteristics clothing, appearance, and traits that defined them, whether these were accurate dipctions or not is a project for another time.
