The Other Yokohama-e

This exhibition pulls from museums all over the globe to highlight the presence Asian peoples in the genre of yokohama-e (横浜絵) woodblock prints. While future research will investigate the role of these prints in defining a modern sense of national identity, first prints with Asian nations and ethnicities need to be identified and documented. This exhibition will also place yokohama-e within the historical context of Edo Period Japan and briefly introduce the previous themes in English research on yokohama-e.
